Indonesia: Monsoon season begins in Jakarta and Banten November 29

Weather officials announce the start of the rainy season for Jakarta and Banten on November 29; associated flooding and landslides possible in the coming months

Warning

Event

Indonesia’s Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced on Friday, November 29, that Jakarta and Banten have entered the 2019/2020 rainy season. According to BMKG, Jakarta will experience peak rainy season in February 2020. Authorities are warning residents to prepare for flooding caused by continuous rain or by high intensity rainfall over a short time period. Associated landslides are also possible during the rainy season.

Advice

Individuals in Jakarta and Banten are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
