India: Indian National Congress plans protests throughout Maharashtra State Jan. 22

Indian National Congress plans protests throughout Maharashtra State Jan. 22. Increased security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The opposition Indian National Congress (INC) party has called for protests throughout Maharashtra State Jan. 22. Organizers are demanding legal action against Arnab Goswami, the editor-in-chief of Republic TV. INC leaders accuse Goswami of violating the Official Secrets Act for apparently accessing sensitive information in advance of Indian airstrikes carried out against Pakistani targets in early 2019. Protesters intend to gather outside Republic TV headquarters in Mumbai. Organizers have not announced specific intended protest venues in other areas of Maharashtra, though gatherings are most likely near INC party offices, Republic TV facilities, and government buildings. Participation in most of the protests will likely be in the dozens to hundreds.

Security personnel will likely deploy near large protests. Officers could attempt to enforce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) gathering restrictions in some areas. Clashes between protesters and security personnel are possible, especially if authorities attempt to disperse protesters. Large protests will likely prompt ground transport disruptions near rally sites.

Advice

Avoid all demonstration venues due to the threat of violence. If clashes break out nearby, vacate the area and take shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Monitor trusted local media for updates, as organizers may not announce protest details in advance. Heed all instructions from security personnel. Allow additional time for travel near all demonstrations.
