Afghanistan: Suspected Taliban kidnap 27 activists in Farah province December 24

Suspected Taliban militants kidnap 27 activists on Farah province highway December 24; similar incidents to be expected over the near term

At least 27 activists of the People's Peace Movement (PPM) have reportedly been kidnapped in the evening (local time) of Tuesday, December 24. A PPM convoy of six cars was reportedly travelling on the main highway from Herat to Farah provinces when the vehicles were stopped by suspected Taliban militants and taken to an unknown location. The Taliban have not immediately claimed responsibility for the incident.

Similar incidents are to be expected in Afghanistan over the near term.

The Taliban have previously accused the PPM of being financed by Kabul's government.

Individuals in Farah province are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
