Philippines: 36 killed in June 2 attack at Manila resort /update 5

Event

At least 36 people were killed in an attack perpetrated by an unidentified gunman at the casino of the Resorts World Manila complex at approximately 01:30 (local time) on Friday, June 2. The attacker did not open fire; the deaths were due to smoke inhalation after the gunman set fire to several gaming tables. Dozens of other people were injured. The National Police Chief of the Philippines announced that the assailant later killed himself. The incident has been classified as a botched robbery and was not terrorist-related, despite an apparent claim by the terrorist group Islamic State (IS).

Operations have resumed at the nearby Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL), which was put on lockdown at 03:30. Security remains tight in the vicinity of the incident as the investigation continues.
