Myanmar: Rally reported in Yangon December 1

Support rally reported in Yangon ahead of ICJ hearings December 1; further rallies may occur

Warning

Event

Around 700 people, including members of the National League for Democracy party, gathered in front of the Yangon City Hall on Sunday, December 1, to support Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi ahead of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) hearings scheduled to start on Tuesday, December 10.

Similar rallies are possible in the coming weeks. A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protests.

Context

The Gambia has filed a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on November 11, accusing Myanmar of genocide against the Muslim Rohingya community on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Burmese authorities have denied the accusation and Aung San Suu Kyi, as the head of the government, stated she will herself coordinate Myanmar's the defense before the court.

Advice

Individuals in the area are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, avoid discussing sensitive political topics in public or online, and obey all instructions issued by the local government.
