Afghanistan: Explosion reported in Kabul February 11

Security forces and emergency personnel respond to reports of an explosion in Kabul’s PD5 area on February 11; avoid the area

An explosion was reported near Marshal Fahim University in Kabul’s PD5 area at approximately 07:05 (local time) on Tuesday, February 11. Gunfire was reported following the blast. According to local media reports, ambulances were seen driving towards the area of the incident. No information has been released regarding casualties as of 08:15. Details are still emerging and the situation remains fluid.

Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Individuals in Kabul are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
