Gunmen from an unspecified criminal outfit reportedly opened fire on a mining office in Timika (Papua province) around 14:00 (local time) on Monday, March 30, killing one person and wounding six others. Workers have been evacuated from the office. Security forces were reportedly in pursuit of the assailants in the Kuala Kencana area following the attack.

Similar attacks on mining operations are possible in Papua province over the near term.


Armed separatists have launched several attacks near mining areas in Papua province in recent years, including assaults on vehicles traveling on the main supply route to a mining area near Timika.
