Brazil: Transport hike protests to continue on January 23 /update 3

Organization schedules additional protest in São Paulo on January 23; transportation disruptions expected

The civil society group Passe Livre has called for a fourth protest in São Paulo on Thursday, January 23, in continued opposition to a transportation fare hike. The organization has called on government to completely eliminate transportation costs. Participants are scheduled to gather at the Terminal Pq. D. Pedro II at 17:00 (local time) and will begin a march at 18:00 towards an undisclosed location.

Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the vicinity of the protest. Skirmishes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in São Paulo are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate localized disruptions.
