Election candidate supporters to stage rallies across Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, Dec. 5. Tight security very likely at action sites.

Warning

Event

Supporters of the Medan mayoral election candidate and incumbent Akhyar Nasution plan to stage rallies across the city, Dec. 5. Akhyar is running against Bobby Nasution, son-in-law of President Joko Widodo, in the Dec. 9 election. While the venues are unclear, possible action sites include the City Hall and popular gathering locations, like Al Mashun Great Mosque and prominent intersections. The start time of the rallies is unclear. Organizers claim thousands of people will participate in the action.

Heightened security is very likely during the rallies. Authorities are also increasing security at election commission offices, as well as party and candidate headquarters. Localized transport and business disruptions will probably occur during any action, especially if the rally participants occupy nearby roads. Counterrallies by Bobby's supporters may occur nearby the sites. Clashes between security forces and rally participants are possible. Mass arrests may occur if security forces consider any action to violate coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions.

Advice

Avoid any rallies due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions around the locations. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
