Myanmar will celebrate its 73rd Independence Day, a nationwide public holiday, Jan. 4. The largest events will probably occur in Naypyidaw and Yangon. An official ceremony will occur at the Presidential Palace in Naypyidaw. Smaller gatherings will likely occur in other urban centers like Mandalay. Events will probably be significantly smaller than in previous years due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) controls. Government office and business closures are likely Jan. 4.

Authorities will almost certainly heighten security at event and prominent celebration sites and transport hubs as a precaution. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely at event locations and transport centers. Officials may increase health checks at program sites and other crowded places as part of COVID-19 protocols. Petty crime, such as theft and pickpocketing, typically heightens during public holidays.
