Vietnam: Reduced internet bandwidth ongoing nationwide as of Jan. 11

Decreased internet bandwidth ongoing in Vietnam as of Jan. 11 due to damaged undersea cable. Speed reductions, outages likely.

Informational

Event

Periods of reduced internet speeds will likely continue in Vietnam as of Jan. 11 until operators repair a section of the Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) undersea communications cable. The APG said the cable broke down Jan. 9. Another undersea cable, Intra Asia, is also experiencing issues since Jan. 1. The timeline of the repair works is unclear.

Although some providers have rerouted traffic to alternative cables, users of domestic internet service providers, including FTP, Viettel, and VNPT, will likely continue to experience slow internet speeds and connectivity issues through mid-January. Issues are especially likely for users who access websites and services hosted outside of Vietnam.

Advice

Plan for possible communication and business disruptions due to reduced bandwidth. Consider alternative modes of communication, such as satellite connections, for critical business operations.
