India: Officials extend gathering restrictions in Agartala, Tripura State, through Jan. 30 /update 1

Officials extend enhanced security measures in Agartala, Tripura, India, through Jan. 30, amid continued protests and clashes.

Warning

Event

Officials in Tripura State are extending enhanced security measures under Section 144 across Agartala through at least 0600 Jan. 30. The curbs ban gatherings of more than five people and the carrying of arms and allow authorities to impose additional security restrictions. The decision came into effect 0600 Jan. 27 following clashes that occurred late the previous day when police cleared a protest site at Paradise Choumuhani intersection; thousands of teachers retrenched under court orders have held sit-ins at the location since Dec. 7. Protest organizers under the Joint Movement Committee (JMC) and supporters from political and civil outfits have demonstrated outside the police headquarters and chief minister's residence since Jan. 27, prompting sporadic clashes. Further protests are likely in the coming days.

Increased police deployment and road closures due to security cordons are likely, especially around government buildings and rally sites. Demonstrations by retrenched teachers are most likely outside state government buildings and at public squares. Hundreds to thousands of people may participate in gatherings. Localized transport disruptions are possible near protest sites, especially if activists block or march on roads. Police have resorted to tear gas and water cannons to disperse earlier gatherings. If significant violence occurs, additional movement and telecommunication restrictions, as well as business closures may occur.

Advice

Confirm business appointments and transport reservations across Agartala through at least Jan. 30. Avoid all protests due to possible clashes. Plan alternative routes if certain roadways are blocked. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Heed all security personnel instructions. Monitor trusted local media sources for updates on protests and road conditions, as organizers may not announce protest locations.
