Bangladesh: Fresh protests reported in Dhaka January 15 /update 1

Students stage second day of protest in Dhaka to oppose local elections date on January 15; heightened security and localized transportation disruptions expected



Students from Dhaka University are staging rallies in Dhaka for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, January 15, to protest the chosen date for the north and south Dhaka's local elections on Thursday, January 30, which falls on a Hindu holiday.

A student march, originally scheduled to take place from Dhaka University campus to the Election Commission in Agargeon, has been blocked by police at the Shahbagh intersection, where students continued to stage protest in the afternoon (local time) on Wednesday.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the protest over the coming hours.
