Mongolia: Parts of western Khovd province flooded on May 19
Melting snow from the Altai Mountains causes the River Bulgan to overflow and flood parts of Khovd province on May 19
Event
The River Bulgan, located in the western Khovd province, overflowed on Friday, May 19, due to snow melt from the Altai Mountains. Parts of Khovd province have been affected by flash floods due to the river’s rising water levels. Water levels are expected to continue to rise in the coming days, causing the governor of the Bulgan district to declare a state of emergency. A special flood unit has been set up to evacuate the flooded areas of Bulgan.
Context
This past winter saw greater than usual snowfall, leading to larger volumes of snow melt.
Advice
Individuals present in the region are advised to follow all instructions issued by the authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs disposed of.
