Mozambique: Opposition extends ceasefire indefinitely May 3

RENAMO opposition group announces decision to extend ceasefire indefinitely May 3

Informational

Event

On Thursday, May 3, Afonso Dhlakama, the leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) opposition group, agreed to extend a truce with the government indefinitely. The original ceasefire was declared on December 27, 2016. Dhlakama said that it was “not the end of the war but the beginning of the end.” The ceasefire will help in the establishment of a peace process.

Context

The RENAMO militant group refuses to accept the results of the 2014 presidential elections, which resulted in the victory of Filipe Nyusi, the Mozambique Liberation Movement (FRELIMO) candidate. RENAMO has since been blamed for carrying out numerous attacks in central and northern Mozambique.

Advice

Individuals present in Mozambique are advised to avoid nonessential road travel outside urban centers in central Mozambique, and to cooperate with authorities at checkpoints (always carry current identification and, if relevant, vehicle documentation with you). On a related note, crime rates are relatively high; as such, visitors to Mozambique are advised to maintain a low profile at all times, to be particularly vigilant after dusk, and to avoid traveling by foot at night. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and with all valuables hidden from sight. Keep in mind that criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye.
