Saudi Arabia: Houthi incursion into Saudi Arabia May 25

Houthi fighters enter Saudi Arabia and attack soldiers on May 25

Warning

Event

Houthi fighters entered the village of Mujazah, in the Asir province in Saudi Arabia on May 25, a few weeks after a successful offensive led the rebels to control the military base of Raboah in Asir province. According to a military source, the rebels destroyed military vehicles, equipment, and killed many Saudi soldiers.

Context

The southern region of Saudi Arabia is a frequent target of Houthi attacks and cross-border incidents are often reported.  Missiles fired from inside Yemen often land on Saudi soil or are intercepted by Saudi air defense systems. Houthi rebels often cross into Saudi territory to target Saudi soldiers. Saudi Arabia has intensified its surveillance on the border with Yemen.

Yemen is engaged in a complex and deadly conflict, ongoing since Houthi rebels entered into a civil war with the Saudi-backed government in 2015.

Advice

Individuals are advised to avoid the Yemeni border area due to the risk of further attacks.
