Warning

Event

The South African Community Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) are planning to hold a protest march in Pretoria on Thursday, May 18. According to the United States Embassy in Pretoria, the demonstration will be held from 09:30 until 15:30 (local time) in front of the United Nations Offices on Francis Baard. It is unclear how many people will participate, but SACP has been granted a 1500-person permit for the march. Expect localized traffic disruptions in the area.

Context

The SACP and COSTAU are protesting in support of the Venezuelan government of President Nicolás Maduro. According to the groups, they support the democratically elected government and it’s Bolivian Revolution. Both groups claim that South Africa and other members of the international community are attempting to destabilize Venezuela.

Advice

Individuals in Pretoria are advised to monitor the situation, to anticipate potential transportation disruptions, and to avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of violence.

On a separate note, individuals in the country - particularly in urban areas - are advised to be on guard against high levels of criminal activity and to maintain a low profile at all times. Be particularly vigilant after dusk and avoid traveling on foot after nightfall. Criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and all personal possessions hidden from sight.
