Thailand: Dozen districts flooded in Bangkok May 30

Torrential rains on Tuesday, May 30, prompt flash floods in 11 districts in Bangkok

Warning

Event

At least 29 areas across 11 districts in Bangkok were flooded on the morning of Tuesday, May 30, following torrential rain that hit the capital. The highest rainfall was measured at 9.5 cm (4 in) in the Bang Khen district. Floodwaters were as deep as 20 cm (4 to 8 in) in some areas.

Flooded areas include roads in the districts of Bang Khae, Phra Nakhon, Lak Si, Chatuchak, Samphanthawong, Dusit, Bang Khen, Ratchathewi, Din DaengChom Thong, and Phaya Thai.

Context

The monsoon (rainy) season spans from April to October, during which time flooding is relatively common. Parts of Bangkok were flooded May 16-17, with streets inundated and major traffic congestion reported across the city.

Advice

Individuals in Bangkok are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
