Greece: Protest in central Athens June 13

Anti-crime protest to take place in central Athens June 13; violence possible

Warning

Event

A demonstration is set to take place in central Athens on Tuesday, June 13, to demand the government to take action to address crime issues in the Menidi district of the city. The time of the demonstration is still unknown. Some 20 buses will take demonstrators from Medini to Kanellopoulou Street (near the Citizens’ Protection Ministry), where the protest will take place. Localized traffic disruptions in the area and violence are possible.

Context

Demonstrators are demanding more police presence in the Menidi district and more specifically a police station near a school where an 11-year-old boy died on June 8. The district is one of the poorest of Athens and has been the theater of clashes between the diverse communities, especially with the Roma community.

Advice

Individuals in Athens are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
