As of 17:45 (local time) on Monday, June 12, the Hong Kong Observatory was warning of violent and strengthening winds as Tropical Cyclone Merbok approached the island. A “Number 8 Gale and Storm” signal is expected to remain in force throughout the day.

According to current forecasts, Merbok is expected to make landfall in China within 50 km (30 mi) of Hong Kong late on Monday night. Violent gales and heavy rain will affect the entire territory June 12-13. Subsequent flash flooding is possible. Maximum gusts are forecast to reach 95 km/h (60 mph).
