Japan: Train services disrupted due to heavy rains in eastern Japan June 21 /update 1

Event

Heavy rains hit the eastern side of Japan on Wednesday, June 21. The Japanese Meteorological Agency warned that landslides are possible in the Oita and Kumamoto prefectures. Local officials in the Shizuoka prefecture issued a temporary evacuation order to over 360,000 residents in Hamamatsu due to possible flooding. The strong wind and heavy rains also caused disruptions to some railway services, including parts of the Tokaido Shinkansen line. Rains are expected to continue through at least 06:00 (local time) on Thursday, June 22. Additional transportation disruptions and evacuation orders may occur.

Context

According to forecasts, some parts of the Tokai region are expected to receive up to 200 mm (7.9 in) of rainfall and up to 180 mm (7.1 in) in the Kinki region through June 22.
