Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said that ten people were killed when a boat capsized while traveling in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, June 20. According to officials, the boat was ferrying 22 people and building materials from Ndau Islands to Lamu Island when it capsized in the Mkanda Chanel. Police officials said the boat capsized due to rough seas.
Context
Fatal boating accidents in the Indian Ocean off of Kenya’s coast are rare. In January 2012, two boats collided near Lamu Island, resulting in seven fatalities.
