Mozambique: Three suspected Al-Shabaab militants arrested in Mucojo (Cabo Delgado province)

Police forces arrest three suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Mucojo, Cabo Delgado province

Warning

Event

The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) arrested three Mozambicans suspected of belonging to the Somali jihadist group Al-Shabaab last week in Mucojo, Cabo Delgado province (northeast). According to a police source, the three individuals in question reportedly belong to a Muslim group that promotes disinformation and calls for members to rise up against the government.

Context

While Mozambique is considered a low-terror threat country, this is the second arrest of suspected Al-Shabaab militants in the country, raising fears of a growing jihadist network. In May 2017, police forces arrested suspected militants in Quissanga district (Cabo Delgado province).

Advice

Individuals present in Mozambique are advised to remain vigilant at all times (especially during public events, as well as in crowded places) and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.

On a separate note, individuals in Mozambique are advised to avoid nonessential road travel outside urban centers in central Mozambique, and to cooperate with authorities at checkpoints (always carry current identification and, if relevant, vehicle documentation with you). Crime rates are relatively high; as such, visitors to Mozambique are advised to maintain a low profile at all times, to be particularly vigilant after dusk, and to avoid traveling by foot at night. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and with all valuables hidden from sight. Keep in mind that criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye.
