United Kingdom: Seven dead, 48 wounded in London attack /update 7

Event

The London Metropolitan Police Service has announced that at least seven people have been killed and 48 wounded after the terrorist attack in London Bridge on June 3. Police announced that the three attackers, who were wearing fake suicide belts, were shot within eight minutes of police receiving the first emergency call at around 22:00 (local time). All three assailants have been pronounced dead.

Authorities have made 12 arrests in connection with the attacks on Sunday, June 4. London bridge and Borough stations remain closed, and the area surrounding the attacks is cordoned off. Transportation disruptions are likely to continue for the next day.

Context

Authorities closed both sides of London Bridge on the night of June 3, after a van reportedly hit pedestrians and three attackers stabbed multiple people. At 00:25 (local time) on Sunday, June 4, government officials declared the security incidents at London Bridge and Borough Market terrorist attacks. The attack is the third terror attack on British soil in three months. 

On Monday, May 22, at least 22 people were killed and 59 injured in an explosion that occurred at the Manchester Arena. The incident was the biggest since 2005, when 52 people died and 700 others were injured in an attack on  London's transportation network.
