Cuba: Day of National Rebellion celebrations July 26

Events planned nationwide on July 26 to commemorate the Day of National Rebellion; expect related business disruptions

Warning

Event

Cuba will celebrate Día de la Rebeldía Nacional (Day of National Rebellion) on Wednesday, July 26. Towns and cities across the country will hold events, generally large rallies in central plazas, to commemorate the beginning of the insurrection led by Fidel Castro. Many businesses will be closed and service and transportation disruptions should be expected throughout Cuba during the holiday.

Context

This year is the 64th anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks by revolutionary fighters led by Fidel Castro on July 26, 1953. While both assaults failed, they are seen as the start of the Movimiento 26 Julio (M 26-7) which ultimately led to the end of Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship on July 1, 1959.

Advice

Individuals in Cuba are advised to monitor local media in order to get updated information. Business disruptions are to be expected during the holiday.
