Kenya: Deadly attack targeting police by herders in Laikipia County

Event

At least six police officers were killed and four others wounded in an attack by semi-nomadic herders in Laikipia County (central Kenya), according to a police report released on Wednesday, July 12. The herders – members of the Pokot ethnic group - reportedly opened fire on officers at the Laikipia Nature Conservancy, who are part of a unit that works to prevent livestock thefts. Further violent clashes in the area are possible.

Context

Drought conditions are believed to be the main cause of ongoing violent clashes in the region, responsible for at least 40 deaths this year, with herders illegally invading private reserves in search of pasture for their cattle. The herders have been previously armed with spears and automatic weapons, and have also stolen livestock and burned property in the area. 

Kenyans will go to the polls on August 8 for general elections. Human Rights Watch has stated that people displaced by violence in Laikipia and Baringo counties risk being unable to vote next month.

Several Nairobi neighborhoods, including Eastleigh and Pangani, should be avoided.
