South Africa: Increased security measures at OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg)

Authorities have announced increased security measures at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) from July 22 due to increase in criminal incidents

Warning

Event

Authorities have announced an increase in security measures at Johannesburg's  OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) on Saturday, July 22, to be introduced over coming weeks. The measures, as part of a broader crackdown on criminal incidents at the airport and on surrounding roads, will include additional security screening within the airport, and sporadic roadblocks on access roads to the airport. Travelers should anticipate possible delays and allow extra time for travel to and from the airport.

Context

An increase in criminal incidents at the airport have led to a security "clean-up" by authorities. On July 21, seven police officers, 34 information desk clerks and eight tourism officials were suspended. Additional police officers are expected to be deployed to the airport, with an increase in visible policing.

Anti-crime activists have called on the government and airport management to take action to prevent violent crime in the area, which they claim frequently targets travelers leaving the airport. Criminal gangs reportedly use spotters in the airport to identify victims, who they follow from the arrivals area in vehicles.

Advice

Travelers should anticipate possible delays and allow for extra time in reaching the airport and for security clearance at check-in.

Given high levels of criminality, travelers are advised to organize their arrival prior to landing in order to minimize the likelihood of being targeted. Arrange to be met at the airport by a trusted contact and carry only the minimum amount of cash and valuable objects. Adhere to all instructions issued by airport and security personnel.

More generally, individuals in the country - particularly in urban areas - are advised to be on guard against high levels of criminal activity and to maintain a low profile at all times. Be particularly vigilant after dusk and avoid traveling on foot after nightfall. Criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and all personal possessions hidden from sight.
