Southeast Europe: Heatwave hits Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey

Southeast Europe is suffering from record high temperatures with Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey all hitting over 40°C (104°F) temperatures. The heat claimed the lives of two Cyprian women and five Bulgarian nationals over the weekend (July 1-2) and triggered wildfires in the Menderes district of Turkey’s Izmir province. These fires have so far claimed over 500 hectares (1235 acres) of land, damaging power lines and forcing the local authorities to cut the main water supply for Izmir's southern and southwestern districts. Nearby urban areas as well as the resort towns of Gümüldür and Özdere have also been affected by power and water cuts.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, remain indoors as much as possible between 10:00 and 16:00 (local time) when temperatures tend to peak, stay well-hydrated (with sugar-free, non-alcoholic beverages), and wear loose, light-colored clothing. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if displaying symptoms of heatstroke (high fever, hot, red, dry skin, headache, nausea, drowsiness, intense thirst, confusion, convulsions, and loss of consciousness).  Further, individuals near Izmir are advised to monitor developments to the situation and to adhere to any advice or instructions issued by local authorities.
