All five attacks took place within a 70-minute period in the Islington, Stoke Newington, and Hackney areas. According to police sources, the assailants stole mopeds in two of the attacks. Authorities have confirmed that the two teenaged suspects have been arrested. One victim reportedly suffered “life-changing injuries.” The motive for the attacks is still under investigation.

The Metropolitan Police Service (Met) issued a report in March 2017 noting that there has been an increase in acid attacks in London. According to police officials, there were 166 incidents in 2014, 261 in 2015, and 454 in 2016. The Met said that the upward trend is continuing in 2017.
