Ecuador: Public transit strike in Quito August 25

24-hour bus strike in Quito August 25; increased road congestion likely

Warning

Event

A 24-hour public transit strike is set to take place in the capital Quito on Friday, August 25. Some 1500 buses will be off the streets throughout the day in protest of the municipal government’s refusal to increase fares. Trolley buses (trolébus) as well as Corredores and Ecovía buses will still run.

In response, the local government has suspended rolling driving restrictions that are normally in effect in the capital region (Pico y Placa program). Increased traffic congestion and increased demand for taxis is to be anticipated throughout the day. Associated demonstrations are possible.

Advice

Individuals in Quito are advised to avoid any protests as a precaution and to allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
