Germany: Rail disruptions to continue until October 7 /update 1

A major rail line between Rastatt and Baden-Baden, located in the west of the country, will be closed until at least October 7, according to the Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national railway operator. Emergency repair work began on August 14 after sagging tracks were discovered; the work was initially expected to be completed by August 26.

Long-distance trains throughout Germany, including international services, have been rerouted to avoid this stretch of track. Trains between Switzerland and Germany via the Basel border crossing are affected, including trains to and from the German cities of Frankfurt, Freiburg, and Offenburg, as well as other destinations in the north and the west of the country. Trains connecting Paris with Stuttgart and Munich are also disrupted. Cancelations and delays of up to 90 minutes are to be anticipated and rail timetables are being progressively updated.

A bus replacement service between Rastatt and Baden-Baden has been set up, operating between 05:15 and 00:15 (local times) daily. Severe delays are thus expected as passengers traveling via train must change on to buses for that short stretch in order make ensuing connections.
