Malaysia: Year-long lane closure on Penang Bridge from August 22
Slow and emergency lanes on Penang Bridge between Seberang Perai and George Town to close August 22 for one year for maintenance
Event
The Penang Bridge linking Seberang Perai and George Town will experience lane closures while it undergoes scheduled maintenance beginning on Tuesday, August 22. The work, which is expected to continue for one year, will lead to closures of the slow and emergency lanes as part of a routine check of the stay cables; the mainland-bound side will experience the closures during the first six months while the island-bound side will be affected the second six months (beginning February 2018). To ease congestions, an extra lane will be activated during the rush hour on the affected portion of the bridge. During the first six months, an extra lane will be activated on the mainland-bound side from 16:00 (local time) to 20:00 daily; the second six months will have a lane on the island-bound side open from 06:00 to 10:00.
Context
More than 80,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily, and it is a vital link between the island and the mainland.
Advice
Individuals are advised to plan ahead for potential transportation delays, and should use the Batu Kawan-Batu Maung bridge as an alternative.
