Paraguay: Teacher strike and protests August 24-25
Teachers launch 48-hour strike August 24; associated marches in capital Asunción and elsewhere
Event
Teachers are launching a 48-hour strike on Thursday, August 24, to demand salary increases. Associated marches are set to take place across the country on both days. The largest demonstrations will take place in the capital Asunción - including protests in squares across the city and marches - beginning at 09:00 (local time) on both days. Furthermore, student groups will also hold a protest in the capital on Friday, marching from the Ministry of Education building to the National Congress building, beginning at 08:00.
Major violence is unlikely although some clashes between protesters and police are possible, particularly if the former erect roadblocks. Localized traffic disruptions are to be expected.
Advice
Individuals in Asunción, and Paraguay more generally, are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and to never attempt to cross a roadblock without authorization.
