Southern Europe: Ongoing heatwave forecast through August 4

Excessive heat has hit southern and central Europe with temperatures of up to 45°C (113°F) forecast through Friday, August 4. Local authorities from Hungary, Romania, Italy, Bulgaria, and the Balkan countries have issued red alert warnings, which are expected to stay in effect until Friday, possibly longer.

In France, the national meteorological agency (Météo France) has placed 13 southeastern departments under “orange” alert warnings - the second-highest on a four-point scale - set to remain in effect until Friday morning. Temperatures ranging from 31°C (87°F) to a record high 42°C (108°F) degrees have been registered. The concerned departments are Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-Maritimes, Ardèche, Bouches-du-Rhône, Corse-du-Sud, Haute-Corse, Drôme, Isère, Gard, Rhône, Var, and Vaucluse.

Individuals in areas affected by extreme temperatures are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, to remain well-hydrated (with sugar-free, non-alcoholic beverages), to wear loose, light-colored clothing, and to remain indoors during the hottest part of the day (generally between 10:00 and 15:00). Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if displaying symptoms of heatstroke (headache, dizziness, muscle weakness, lack of sweating despite high heat, rapid heartbeat, etc.).
