Ride-hailing app Uber to lose its license to operate in London from October 1

On Friday, September 22, Transport for London (TfL) announced that Uber’s private hire operator license, which expires on September 30, will not be renewed. As such, the company will not be allowed to operate in the Greater London area from October 1. According to TfL, the firm failed to meet basic safety standards.
Uber has promised to challenge the ban in court, claiming some 3.5 million passengers and some 40,000 drivers will be affected.
Context
Uber has disrupted the minicab and taxi market in London causing widespread outrage from taxi unions.
Moreover, it has been criticized for poor working conditions, failing to adequately address sexual assault cases, and failing to enforce comprehensive criminal checks, as well as a rise in accidents.
