United States: Continuing wildfires in southern California as of Sep. 28

Firefighters continue to battle wildfires in southern California as of September 28; fire expected to be contained by end of weekend

Warning

Event

Firefighters continued to work to control several wildfires in southern California on Thursday, September 28. The Canyon Fire, the largest of the fires, started at around 13:00 (local time) on Monday, September 25, and spread alongside the Riverside Freeway, just west of Green River Road, to Coal Canyon Road not far from the Riverside Freeway. The Canyon Fire still covers about 2000 acres in Orange and Riverside counties. Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for affected areas, but were lifted on Wednesday, September 27. Schools and roads were closed due to hazardous conditions and concerns about poor air quality; schools reopened on Thursday. No injuries have been reported. As of the morning of Thursday, September 28, the Canyon Fire was 45 percent contained; officials report that the fire is expected to be fully contained by the end of the weekend. Transportation disruptions (road closures) should be anticipated in surrounding areas until the fire has been brought under control.

Context

Wildfires are common in California during the hot and dry summer and early autumn months. Rugged terrain and intense dry heat often exacerbate difficulties in controlling fires.

Advice

Individuals are advised to exercise caution when traveling in areas affected by the wildfires, to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and to keep abreast of the situation.
