Chinese authorities reportedly blocked the internet communication software Skype on Wednesday, November 22, adding it to the long list of other communication tools on China’s blacklist. Skype is no longer available for download in the China Apple Store or Android sites and Chinese users have reported that the program has been non-functional for several weeks. Skype for Business, a separate application tailored for corporate use, is also reportedly unavailable for download as of November 22.
Context
According to the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, Skype does not comply with local regulations.
China tightened its already stringent online policy this year ahead of the Communist Party Congress in October 2017. Additional digital security measures have been added to the WhatsApp messaging application, severely affecting the app’s functionality. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and a number of other such applications have been banned for years under China’s system of internet censorship nicknamed the “Great Firewall.”
