Haiti: Anti-gang operations in Port-au-Prince

Event

Nine people were killed in an anti-gang police operation carried out in Port-au-Prince on Monday, November 16. According to local sources, fighting broke out on Avenue Bolosse, near Maranatha Evangelical College in the Martissant neighborhood. A police spokesperson confirmed that two police officers were killed along with seven civilians, including a security guard and a professor. Thirty-one suspected gang members were also arrested during the operation.

The United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) condemned the violence and called for an investigation.

Context

Crime rates are very high in urban areas throughout Haiti due in part to gang activities. Theft, kidnapping-for-ransom, and extortion are all common. Foreigners are often targeted due to their perceived wealth.
