Togo: Nationwide teachers’ strike November 13-15

Teachers strike to take place nationwide November 13-15; associated protests possible

Warning

Event

Primary and secondary schools teachers announced a 96-hour strike to be held nationwide from Monday, November 13, to Wednesday, November 15. The teachers unions are primarily demanding additional financial allowances and better working conditions. Organizers have warned that further strikes will be planned if demands are not met.

Strike-related protests are possible, particularly in Lomé. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Education unions carried out a 96-hour strike in December 2016 as well as in March 2017, leading to counter protests by students.

In mid-January 2017, the government created a working group comprised of unions, students' parents from private and public schools, and technical and financial partners, to find durable solutions to the education sector crisis. A compromise was finally met in March 2017 on the different issues raised. However, teachers unions are claiming the government has not fulfilled its agreed obligations.

Advice

Individuals in Togo are advised to avoid all public gatherings (particularly political events) due to the risk of violence and to monitor the situation. Be prepared to shelter in place in the event of further unrest or a sudden deterioration in the country's security situation (stock up on food, water, and other necessities).
