Afghanistan: Increased security measures in Kabul /update 1

An increased security presence was reported at Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) checkpoints across the capital Kabul on Wednesday, December 13. Armored vehicles have been pulled over and all documentation checked for validity; illegal vehicles have also been seized by security forces.

This security campaign is due to continue into the New Year in the capital and then spread to the rest of the country. As such, company operating licenses, weapons, communications, vehicles, and associated equipment will continue to come under heightened scrutiny for the foreseeable future. Previous directives of a similar nature have seen checkpoints set up near Kabul International Airport (KBL), with the luggage of foreign arrivals checked for illegal alcohol and contraband.

Individuals in Kabul should ensure that staff/client work permits, visas, and identification documents are current and that all paperwork is both present and correct before departing on any journey. Allow extra time for your local journeys.

Due to major security concerns, individuals throughout Afghanistan are urged to keep a safe distance from large gatherings, military convoys, government buildings, and crowded urban areas. Many Western governments advise their citizens against travel to Afghanistan due to the high threat of kidnapping and terrorism, including frequent attacks against ANDFS, local civilians and politicians, and individuals working in the humanitarian and reconstruction fields. Travel to the country should only be undertaken with proper security protocols in place.
