Philippines: Hundreds of dead following Tropical Storm Tembin Dec. 23 /update 1

Tropical Storm Tembin (also known as Vinta) continued to sweep through Mindanao on Saturday, December 23. According to officials, at least 200 people were reported dead following the passing of the storm, while over 140 are still missing. Tropical Storm Tembin affected more than 70,000 people, with 40,000 currently living in shelters. Heavy rains and wind led to the collapse of multiple dams, leading to flooding and landslides in mountainous areas. The majority of deaths occurred in the provinces of Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga del Norte, and Lanao del Sur. Localized power cuts and transportation disruptions are likely to continue in the coming days.

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly strike the Philippines during the monsoon season - which spans from November to April in the northeast, and from May to October in the southwest. On average, roughly 20 typhoons and tropical storms hit the country each year.
