Togo: Nationwide teacher strike December 5-8
Teachers to strike nationwide December 5-8; associated protests possible
Event
Public school teachers announced a four-day strike will be held nationwide from Tuesday, December 5, to Friday, December 8. The teachers unions are primarily demanding additional financial allowances and better working conditions.
Strike-related protests are possible, particularly in the capital city of Lomé. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Context
Education unions carried out a 96-hour strike in November 2017 as well as in March 2017, leading to counter-protests by students.
In mid-January 2017, the government created a working group comprised of unions, students' parents from private and public schools, and technical and financial partners to find durable solutions to the education sector crisis. A compromise was finally met in March 2017 on the different issues raised. However, teachers unions are claiming the government has not fulfilled its agreed obligations.
Advice
Individuals in Togo are advised to avoid all public gatherings (particularly political events) due to the risk of violence and to monitor the situation. Be prepared to shelter in place in the event of further unrest or a sudden deterioration in the country's security situation (stock up on food, water, and other necessities).
