Australia: Rail strike in Sydney January 29

Event

The Rail, Tram, and Bus Union announced a rail strike for the Sydney area to take place on Monday, January 29, during which no trains will run. New South Wales Transport Minister Andrew Constance has stated that it will be “impossible” to transport more than 1 million passengers using available alternatives. Unless averted, the strike is expected to cause heavy traffic and congestion on roadways, as well as increased demand for alternative modes of transportation (buses, taxis, etc.). 

Context

The Rail, Tram, and Bus Union is calling for a 6 percent annual pay raise for its members over the next four years. According to the Sydney Business Chamber, the strike will cost the local economy more than AUD 100 million (USD 80 million).
