Australia: Severe heatwave conditions in south through Jan. 25

Event

“Severe” heatwave conditions, the second-highest level on a four-tier scale, are expected to continue through Thursday, January 25, in New South Wales and South Australia, with temperatures oscillating between 40 and 45°C (104 - 113°F) in the two states. “Extreme” heatwave conditions (the highest alert level) are expected in the border region of eastern Victoria state and southern New South Wales through Monday, January 22.

Beginning on January 19, the area impacted by the heatwave is expected to progressively shrink over a one-week period to an area near the central-northern coast of New South Wales.

Bushfires are possible in some areas due to the heatwave and following a dry winter.

Context

Similar extreme weather caused widespread problems throughout southeast Australia in early 2017, including power outages.

Advice

Individuals in Australia are advised to follow local weather reports, stay well-hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day and avoid alcohol), and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from noon to 16:00).
