Ecuador: Attack on police station in San Lorenzo Jan. 27
Explosion at police station in San Lorenzo (Esmeraldas province) injures at least 28; attack linked to suspected former FARC militants
Event
At least 28 people were injured in an explosion at a police station in San Lorenzo (Esmeraldas province) on Saturday, January 27. None of the reported injuries were life-threatening. The blast also damaged several buildings. According to security officials, the attack was likely carried out by former members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) militant group in retaliation for security operations targeting drug trafficking near the Ecuadorian-Colombian border.
Context
Ecuadorian security forces have intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking in recent years as domestic trafficking has become more of an issue and the recent demobilization of the FARC in neighboring Colombia has created new opportunities for Colombian (and other) organized crime groups.
A revised peace deal between the FARC and the Colombian government was ratified by the Colombian congress in November 2016 despite vocal opposition. Following complete disarmament of the FARC in August 2017, an estimated 11,300 former militants moved into 26 demobilization zones, where they are receiving training to help transition to civilian life. However, at least 1000 former militants refused to disarm, many of which have continued to traffic drugs.
Advice
Individuals in Ecuador are advised to remain vigilant, to report any suspicious behavior or objects, and to follow instructions as issued by local authorities.
