Jordan: Demonstrations possible due to increase in bread prices

Rise in bread prices as of January 27; demonstrations likely throughout the country

Warning

Event

The price of bread in Jordan doubled on Saturday, January 27, following the suspension of basic product subsidies. According to the government, the new prices will remain in effect until December 31. As such, demonstrations are likely throughout the country in the coming days and weeks, although no planned actions have been announced as of January 29.

Context

Jordan has a public debt of USD 35 billion, which amounts to 90 percent of its GDP. In January 2018, the Jordanian government increased the prices of fuel and bread, as well as the value-added tax on various consumer goods such as cigarettes, sparkling drinks, and jewelry. Simultaneously, the government announced a financial aid package worth USD 761 million to help households in difficulty.

In 2017, protests erupted following a similar increase in consumer prices.

Advice

Individuals in Jordan are advised to stay informed of the situation and to avoid any demonstrations.
