Myanmar: 4.7-magnitude earthquake hits Bago region January 15

Event

Seismic activity continues to present personal security risks to individuals in Myanmar. Most recently, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake shook central Myanmar early on Monday, January 15 (local time). According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck roughly 37 km (27 mi) southwest of Phyu (Bago region) around 00:19 on Monday; no damages or casualties were immediately reported. Additional earthquakes and aftershocks are possible in the region in the near future.

Context

Monday's earthquake comes after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the area early on January 12. 

Myanmar is prone to earthquakes as it sits at the junction of three tectonic plates. Myanmar was hit by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in March 2011 which left 151 people dead and over 210 people injured.

Individuals present in the impacted region are advised to monitor the situation, to be prepared for aftershocks, and to heed to any instructions issued by local authorities.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
