Flooding continues along the Paraguay River in the capital region as of January 17; at least 7000 people evacuated

Heavy rainfall continued to batter the capital city of Asunción as of Wednesday, January 17, worsening flooding along the Paraguay River. Water levels rose to 5.5 m (18 ft) during the storm. More than 7000 people have reportedly been evacuated. The neighborhoods worst hit by flooding are Bañado Norte, Bañado Sur, and La Chacarita. Other areas impacted by the flooding include Vía Férrea, Banco San Miguel, Cerro Guy, Arenera, and Sector Varadero.
More rain is forecast for the capital region until Monday, January 22, which could further aggravate the situation.
Context
Flooding is common in the country, especially along the Paraguay River and in the capital region, in large part due to inefficient drainage systems. Flooding in Asunción in late 2015-early 2016 forced some 100,000 people to flee their homes.
Advice
Individuals present in Asunción are advised to follow instructions issued by local authorities, particularly potential evacuation orders, and keep abreast of weather forecasts. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
