Paraguay: Flooding along Paraguay River in Asunción /update 1
Flooding continues along the Paraguay River in the capital region on January 15; further rain forecast

Heavy rainfall continued to batter the capital Asunción on Saturday and Sunday, January 13-14, worsening flooding along the Paraguay River. Water levels rose by 26 cm (10 in) to 5.28 m (17.32 ft) during the storm. The neighborhoods worst hit by flooding are Bañado Norte, Bañado Sur, and La Chacarita. More than 700 families have evacuated.
More rain is forecast for the capital region beginning on Wednesday, January 17, which could further aggravate the situation.
Context
Flooding is common in the country, especially along the Paraguay River and in the capital region, in large part due to inefficient drainage systems. Flooding in Asunción in late 2015/early 2016 forced some 100,000 people to flee their homes.
Advice
Individuals present in Asunción are advised to follow instructions issued by local authorities, particularly potential evacuation orders, and keep abreast of weather forecasts. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
