Philippines: Ashfall closes Legazpi Airport Jan. 23 /update 7

Aviation authorities in the Philippines shut down operations at Legazpi Airport (LGP) in Albay province on Tuesday, January 23, due to ashfall from Mayon volcano. The airport closure reportedly affects at least nine international and 16 domestic flights. Operations will remain suspended until officials determine that it is safe to resume service.

Officials also expanded the danger zone around Mayon on Tuesday to 9 km (5.6 mi) due to the increasing risk of rockfalls, landslides, and lava flows. Authorities continue to warn that an explosive eruption is possible within hours or days.

Context

Nearly 56,000 people have already fled the area surrounding the Mayon volcano, while authorities have erected checkpoints on roads leading to the volcano to prevent tourists from approaching the hazard zone.

Significant transportation disruptions are expected in the event of a major eruption. Civil aviation authorities have been advised to avoid flying near the volcano crater due to the risk of sudden eruption.

The volcano last erupted in 2014, which prompted thousands of people to evacuate adjacent areas.
